Category is one of the main data objects for WeWrite. Categories are strings of text which can include spaces. All Page types can be categorized.

It's possible that categories will be deprecated in favor of backlinks.

We need to figure out how Categorization of Users will work. Perhaps Users will not be able to be categorized by others (only themselves) and all User Categories will be private. (Thus allowing Users to create a Google+ “circles” type of User filtering experience)

Data structure

  • String (self)

  • Parents (other Categories)

  • Children (other Categories or a list of Pages)

  • Pages in Category

  • Owned by author - view similar by other authors, communities

Perhaps a character limit can be enforced. Or the UI will just truncate long categories and upon click the full title will be revealed. Flexibility will allow more emergent phenomena, probably.

Considerations

"Collaborative categories" has never been thought of before. What if different people categorize things differently? Can I "borrow" how they do it? is it a free-for-all? Are there suggested categories?

Comparing categories: Different Users and Communities will categorize things differently.

UI

Categories will likely be shown as chips at the bottom of a page, similar to how MediaWiki and many blogs do it.

Tapping on a Category will open it up in its proper context, showing its parents and its children.

Category list

On the other hand, pages can be viewed flatly (without category structures) in the page list interface

Rename category

Categories should be able to renamed without breaking anything. That is, all pages associated to that category should still be associated to the newly renamed category.

In MediaWiki this is very labor-intensive. I already have some categories on this wiki I wish to rename but it's too much f*cking work to do so. I'd rather build a competitor to MediaWiki than go through the pain of using MediaWiki.

Suggested categories

It could be cool to suggest categories, this could increase the rate of discoverability for pages. This could be populated by querying the categories used by pages with similar titles, or similar headers
