Backlinks are Pages that link to the current Page. In MediaWiki this is a list called What links here.
In MediaWiki, backlinks are hidden behind a click, but on WeWrite we want to make it more discoverable, and either show the count or show a truncated list which can be expanded.
If Page A links to Page B multiple times, still just count that as a single link.
Traffic flows from backlinks could also be shown, to allow people to see where visitors are coming from.
There could be an easy way to add backlinks to the donation pool so you can donate to the pages which point back to your thing. This would allow us to donate to the giants upon whose shoulders we stand.
Unfortunately backlinks cannot be built in this prototype. This is something we'll have to build later once we have developers.
Structure
Page origin
Snippet of link in question (shows context, shows if the link was named differently than the page) - this is not possible in MediaWiki
Donation / visit attribution
Even donations / new contributions could be attributed to how the user arrived at the page, helping the owner of the page to understand where their contributors are coming from. (eg. 60% of paying contributors found Page B
via Page A
, whereas only 20% of all visits came from Page A
, which means that people from Page A
are more keen on contributing the Page B
than most other visitors)
This needs to be added to the contributor list
Forward links
The opposite of backlinks, or forward links, are just regular links embedded in the page. However, there could be a unique interaction pattern where a user toggles all page text "off" and leaves only the links, thus animating into a "outbound links only" list. Perhaps showing these forward links could also be the way of accessing backlinks, so the user sees both when looking at either.

Here's a further explanation showing how the forelinks and backlinks are related to the current page. Perhaps this could even animate into the transition.
This backlink diagram could be accessible via the following interaction, where the user drags down on the current page in the title to reveal the backlinks (green) and to hide the body text and isolate the body links below.
